It is important to identify the norms within a team because it will tell you how well they can work together and how much they can achieve. The first thing to look at within a group is to see if anybody has an attitude, a person within a group that has a bad attitude will likely rebel against anything the group tries to agree on, which will stir up conflict. Furthermore, a group member that has no work ethic or ambition will not be able to contribute anything to the group, which means less production will get done. It’s also vital to identify the group member with the most charisma and highest work ethic because those characteristics can be used to lead others.
Clear communication is considered an element during team development because it helps to create what the group will be doing along with identifying individual roles and what their identity will be. For instance, a group with strong communication will be able to share ideas, give each other feedback, and solve issues that may arrive. A few years ago, I was affiliated with a group of people on a construction project that went bad because of management. In the storming stage, the leader faces resistance as individuals seek to discover their place in the group’s structure (Tuckman, 1965, p. 6.1). The manager didn’t identify everybody skill set before the performing stage, once it came time to start the job everybody was arguing with one another about who needs to be doing what.

There are five stages of group development including forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. Baack describes norms as “implicit or explicit rules that govern behaviors in the group…The norming stage is complete when members share a common set of expectations about behaviors and contributions to the group” (Baack, 2017, 6.1). These norms help to secure the foundation of the team. They are what the team will be governed by and fully comprehend their values, expectations, behaviors, and processes. If the team happens to get off track, the norms are in place to ensure they get back on track.
Clear communication is key in any situation. Well-defined communication allows for the team to maintain their structure and assists in providing the focus of the team. Any team has to communicate effectively to share information, establish standards, and to make decisions. Without it, the team will fail by all means because they lacked collaboration and coordination.
Lack of communication example? Where do I start because I have a few? One example, I had an immediate supervisor who was older than me by 30 years or so….note I said supervisor. She felt as if I was hired to take her job, which I was not. I was her subordinate yet because of the experience I had, I knew several things to make work a lot easier. I would share things with her and she felt as if I was telling her what to do. I was trying to be the most humble lamb. Therefore, when things were due, she would tell me at the last minute so then I had to work overtime to finish the task and numerous other things happened that caused me to stay late for the lack of communication. If she has put the practices I suggested in place, all that could have been avoided. Needless to say, she left the company before I did. Just senseless because I was there to help her and did not even desire her job.
