To assess these goals students will write a paper in which they will show a critical understanding of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the United States’ adherence to these general principles intended to create a more just and humane world.
This paper will be 5-7pages in length and will focus on outlining two specific ways the U.S. is not adhering to the principles outlined and three specific examples of how the U.S. is guaranteeing basic human rights to its citizens. The paper will then highlight how the service learning experience helped advance these essential human rights, in keeping with the UDHR as well as Barry University’s mission.
The analysis will demonstrate: (a) a solid understanding of sociological concepts presented in class; (b) a thorough integration of course readings, discussion, videos, and service learning experience; (c) the social/policy implications for building more compassionate social institutions/interpersonal relations based on equity and social justice that might minimize, alleviate, or correct the injustices identified.
