Title: From a $9 Billion Valuation to Federal Court

II. Introduction

Scenario:

Since graduating from your Master of Accounting degree program, you have been working as a consultant for the prestigious anti-fraud firm of HLM, Inc. located in Palo Alto, CA. The principals Honer, Levin, and McCormick are Certified Fraud Examiners, have worked in the industry since 1999, and are well known for the high-profile cases they have brought to justice.

As usual, you attended the weekly Friday morning meeting led by one of the three principals; this week Honer led the meeting. He announced that the annual conference of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) was scheduled for next year in Cupertino, CA, which is approximately under eight miles from your office. Further, the ACFE conference planning team contacted HLM, Inc. asking if the company had any interest in providing guest speakers for the conference. Absolutely, said Honer. He committed to providing the conference with two guest speakers for the concurrent sessions and a report for conference attendees to gain a better understanding of the fall of Theranos. On the whiteboard at the front of the conference room, Honer wrote two topics pertaining to the fall of Theranos:

1) Whistleblowing, and

2) Corporate governance.

Eager to get started preparing your presentation file and accompanying report, you return to your office to read background information on the company that Honer handed you as the meeting ended.
