14 Relative Dating INSTRUCTIONS Solve the relative dating problems in the ten blocks below. Write the answers beside the blocks, with the oldest units at the bottom and the youngest units on top. Include all events (folding, faulting, etc.) in their proper sequence. The diagrams in the exercises are similar to those in the examples. If the block has units with letters on them, put the letters in order from oldest to youngest, as we did with the two examples. Add words for erosion events, folding events, intrusions, faults, tilting, etc. If a fault (or other event) is labeled with a letter, refer to it as “Fault A.” If there are several faults and they are not labeled, you may say “the fault on the left” or the “fault on the right.” If a layer does not have a label, determine the rock type from the lithologic symbol, or give its color. If the block is not labeled at all (Blocks 7 and 8), use the lithologic symbols to identify the rock types. Put the rock types and events (erosion, fault, folding, tilting, and intrusion) in order from oldest to youngest, as you did with the other diagrams. In a classroom setting, this exercise works well if students work in pairs or small groups to solve the sequence of events in each block. Each student should write down the answers and be prepared to explain the sequence of events in each block. When everyone has completed the block diagrams, the instructor can ask a student to go to the front of the room to explain his or her logic in determining the sequence of events for a particular block. (If a visual presenter and projector are available, they will be useful to display the block under discussion. The student should give the complete sequence of events without interruption.) After the student finishes his or her explana- tion, the instructor should ask the class if anyone has anything different. Students in the audience should address any differences.
