Immediately after gaining their independence from the colonial masters and the eventual end of the cold war in the late 20th century, a ray of optimism swept across the African continent. Many African leaders as well as the citizens viewed the opportunities presented by these two dynamics as noble for their own advancement and development. However, this will not be the case at least for many countries across the continent. Many societies were largely characterized by pollical upheaval and disorder as well as civil instabilities which left the state chaotic and literally chaotic. This paper explores the reasons and foundations of these chaotic disorders in view of the Bates model. It establishes that in addition to massive corruption and humungous siphoning of public resources by state leaders, other factors such as threats presented by democracy were key in shaping the events leading to state failure at that century.
