In the last few years, there has been a growing public sensitivity to systemic inequalities and other fundamental flaws in the status quo of modern western civilizations. On separate paper, write a 2-paragraph essay about how this sensitivity has played out in fields of study and practice that many people might consider apolitical or otherwise divorced from questions of social justice.

As part of your paper, you must include both quotations below to help you further your case. You may use all or part of the quotations within your essay, but you must quote directly (do not summarize or paraphrase).

Your argument will follow this structure:

Paragraph One: Discuss how fields of study dealing with less tangible human goods, like art and literature, are connected to this growing concern with injustice.

Paragraph Two: Explain how awareness of social justice issues affects discussions of science and medicine.

Include correct in-text citations using either MLA or APA style. At the end of your paper, include a formattedWorks Cited or References page, as appropriate.

The essay will be graded on the following criteria:

1 mark: clarity and coherence of argument and organization

1 mark: effective use of referenced material

2 marks: correct documentation

1 mark: Style and mechanics

QUOTATIONS1. “[Art] galleries are often isolated from the communities in geographical proximity. They have often been places of exclusion, and have historically served to uphold a dominant, European settler-centred narrative. They have played a role in perpetuating colonial and racist attitudes towards Indigenous communities, their art and histories.”

These kinds of training [in the humanities] are extremely useful beyond the pandemic as well because they prepare people to identify endemic problems in healthcare like race, sex, gender, class, and ability biases that structure the health outcomes for entire populations” (839).
