Outcomes Completing this Assessment will help you to meet the following: Course Outcome • Identify purposes of program evaluation, analyze various practices of program evaluation and determine methods of utilizing findings for optimal program outcomes. Directions This week you will write a memo in which you summarize the purposes of program evaluation, analyze different methods and practices for conducting program evaluation, and recommend specific strategies for utilizing the findings of program evaluation to revise and improve programs in the field of human and social services. As you write this memo, imagine you are working as a human services planner/evaluator for your county’s social services department. In your role you work to create, implement, manage, and assure quality of programs offered by your agency. Additionally, you coordinate day-to-day and long-term monitoring of the department’s programs and help to develop, and track programs based on sound data and evidence. Recently, your supervisor came to you because she was concerned about a conversation she overheard in the office breakroom. She heard several employees complaining about the time and money spent on program evaluation. She remembers one employee in particular saying “why are we wasting ALL our time gathering and reviewing data?! It’s so boring! Plus, the programs are already up and running! What good are data and numbers gonna do us now?!” Your supervisor believes it is clear that people in the office do not understand program evaluation or its purposes. Because program evaluation is central to your role, she has asked you to write a memo in which you help to address some of the confusion and misunderstanding that exist within the office. See below for the specific points she would like you to address. You may have written a memo in a previous course (such as INFT124). The body of your memo should be used to address the following: • • • • • In your own words, defend the major purposes of program evaluation. Analyze the various methods that are used to conduct program evaluation. o When possible, compare and contrast the different methods. Offer recommendations for how the findings of program evaluation should be utilized to optimize program implementation, management, and delivery to best meet program outcomes. Conclude your memo by summarizing the crucial points about program evaluation employees in your office should understand.
